Sparrow

It’s Sunday, and I usually sleep in till ten or so, but the morning light has me up by eight. Of course the only reason I’m in any shape at all to get up this early is because Luke reminded me that water and aspirin would save my sorry ass from a hangover. And thinking about that brings my thoughts right back to last night, in full, Technicolor detail.

I’m assuming this is just a one-off. Temporary just like his stay here, but he surprised the hell out of me. After Desi hinted at it, I figured Luke would be good with me taking charge, which I usually enjoy. A lot of times, though, taking charge just means making decisions because nobody else is willing to make them, and that’s not quite as much fun.

Luke liked the way I took charge, but he fucking participated, showed me that he wanted me, that he liked where I took him, and that my little kinky clean-up was welcome. I know I’m the last one to pick up on the fact that I misread the guy entirely. I own that. I’m just still in a state of shock about how wrong I was.

Turning over, I can tell more sleep isn’t going to happen, so I get up and make my way down past a snoring Warwick for coffee. A large window over the sink looks out onto the little patio area, and I find Luke in a yoga pose. He’s barefoot and shirtless, his charcoal-gray sleep pants hanging low on his hips. His hair is a multi-directional mess, his face peaceful in the morning sun.

Abandoning the coffee-making for later, I slide open the barn door. He opens his eyes and smiles when he sees me.

“Want to join me for some sun salutations?” he asks, slipping into Spanish.

“Sure.” I step out onto the porch in my pajama bottoms, noticing the length of rope off to the side. It’s not what we use for the horses.

“You probably know more than I do, so if you want to lead the way, that’d be great.”

I’m happy to see that he’s not awkward about last night, so I take him through a simple flow, and he seems familiar with all but one or two of the positions. I’m more limber than he is, but I appreciate the way he has his own modifications to protect his shoulder and hips, some of which include the rope.

“You’re a lot more flexible than I would’ve guessed,” I say, bumping into his good side.

He raises his shoulder—with a small grimace— and answers, “I’m used to people underestimating me. All these towering young guns in rodeo, and you can always tell how surprised they are when they meet me in person. I mean, I get it. I’m kinda runty. Some even give me shit for it…all the way until I get up on the horse.”

He laughs at himself, and my heart does a stupid thing that I am going to ignore.

“Bet that shuts them up pretty quickly.
